Welcome
to the most extensive coverage of outrigger canoe racing
on the internet! My
name is Michael Nyberg. As
an avid photographer, I started shooting pictures of outrigger
canoes while waiting for my sprint race to start. People
liked what they
saw and a website was born.
My
approach is different than most. I know the sport and I know
photography. I do my best to make you, the paddler, look
good. My focus, sorry
for the pun, is to celebrate the people and the tradition of
outrigger canoe paddling. I also try to maintain as many
pictures online
as possible so that you can continue to celebrate the events.
If you have been to a sprint race in Northern California,
you know
each one is special. These pictures reflect the wide variety
of conditions you will experience at each race site.

As
of June 2006, I now capture all images with a Nikon D50 digital body
mounted to all the fast Nikkor telephoto lenses. Images are captured
in 3000x2000 pixels (6MP). Enlargements of 8x12 and 12x18 are
no problem at this resolution!
When
I do shoot with "real 35mm film," I
use the newsest "pro" films
from Agfa, Kodak,
and Fuji
on any
given
race. Rich, accurate colors
are important. Fast shutters and wide apertures are the
rule. No Kodak "Gold" or "Royal" film
here. If
you can buy it in the supermarket, I don't shoot with it. You
can see the difference in quality.

I
use only Nikon lenses. Currently, I shoot with the D50, F5, and
F3 with assorted lenses. I also use the underwater
Nikon 35mm f2.8 lens camera.
Cheers,
Michael Nyberg
